Shadow Minister for Communications – Media Release – Albanese Weak On ‘Post And Boast’ Crime Laws

There’s new evidence today of young thugs carrying out ‘post and boast’ crimes, demonstrating the Albanese Government’s failure to take action against this shocking conduct.

Media reports this morning revealing young criminals continuing to post their violent and illegal acts online are another reminder of the need for stronger laws.

The Albanese Government has sat on its hands after failing to support tough new laws proposed by the Coalition.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton last year announced plans to make it illegal to post social media material that glamourises violence and criminal activity.

The Coalition’s laws would include jail terms of up to two years for posting material depicting violence, drug offences or property offences for the purpose of increasing a person’s notoriety. There would also be stronger powers to remove offending videos from online sites.

Shadow Communications Minister David Coleman said the Albanese Government failed to support the Coalition legislation when it was introduced to Parliament in March 2024.

“It’s been nearly a year since the Coalition’s plan for stronger national laws was released,” Mr Coleman said.

“Today we are seeing a weak and disengaged PM who is disconnected from the concerns of everyday Australians.

“Teenage thugs are proudly posting their crimes online in the absence of strong national post and boast laws.

“These videos demonstrate why we needs tough new national laws to help stamp out these crimes.

“Australians are fed up with lawless hoons getting a free run online.

“We need strong leadership to tackle these crimes. Australians understand how serious this issue is, but the PM is too weak to do anything about it.”
