Proposed mis- and disinformation laws require careful review

Proposed misinformation and disinformation laws require careful and cautious review.

Shadow Communications Minister David Coleman said freedom of speech and expression are fundamental principles in a democratic society.

“This is a complex area of policy and Government overreach must be avoided,” Mr Coleman said.

“The public will want to know exactly who decides whether a particular piece of content is ‘misinformation’ or ‘disinformation’.

“The significant penalties associated with this legislation potentially places substantial power in the hands of government officials.

“The Coalition encourages interested parties to make a submission on the Government’s proposed changes.

“We will engage with stakeholders and carefully examine the proposed legislation to ensure that it strikes an appropriate balance.”

In March 2022, the Coalition announced plans to introduce legislation to combat harmful misinformation and disinformation online.
