STATE GOVERNMENT MUST REVERSE DECISION TO CLOSE PEAKHURST WEST POOL

The NSW Government has announced that the Peakhurst West community pool will close today (December 6). Community users of the pool were informed of this decision late on December 5.

The Government has stated that the pool will be closed until an Expression of Interest process to run the pool concludes. It has also said that, if the Expression of Interest process does not find a suitable operator “there is a chance that the pool will no longer be viable and will be closed” permanently.

David Coleman, the Federal Member for Banks, has said that the decision to close the pool must be reversed immediately.

The pool has been a historic part of the local area since 1961. It was built and paid for by the community.

“To close the pool with one day’s notice shows a lack of respect for the many groups who rely upon the facility. Hundreds of local residents are involved in community groups that use the pool, and they are in the middle of the swimming season,” Mr Coleman said.

“The reasons provided by the Government for the closure of the pool are wholly inadequate. If the Government wanted to keep the pool open, it could.”

“This decision must be reversed, and the Peakhurst West community pool must remain open.”
