PADSTOW’S INNER JOURNEY RECEIVES FEDERAL FUNDING FOR ENGLISH CLASSES

David Coleman, the Federal Member for Banks, recently met with representatives from Inner Journey to discuss how recent Federal funding is helping the local community.

Under the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities programme, Inner Journey was given just under $3500 to help run English classes for adults in the Chinese community. It is hoped that these classes will not only assist residents with their English-speaking abilities, but also provide a support network for further integration into the wider community.

Based in Padstow, Inner Journey was established in 2011 by Reverend Tony and Michelle Choy, and provides counselling and support for individuals in the local Chinese community who face hardship and adversity.

Mr Coleman has welcomed this funding announcement, noting the positive impact that these English classes will have.

“Inner Journey does important work in our local community, helping those who need it the most,” Mr Coleman said. “I am glad we have been able to secure this funding.”

“By providing this funding, we are helping vulnerable members of our community who may need a bit extra help integrating.”

Reverend Tony Choy has also noted the impact that this funding will have.

“The aim of these classes is to help people with limited English language skills build their speaking skills and confidence, and to use these skills in their daily life to integrate more effectively with the wider English speaking local community,” Rev Choy said. “Thanks to this funding, we’ll be able to continue reaching out to members of the local community who may need a little extra assistance.”
