PEAKHURST WEST POOL TO RE-OPEN THIS SATURDAY

Community members from Sydney’s south have welcomed the announcement that the NSW Government will reopen the Peakhurst West Pool on December 14 after its sudden closure last Friday (December 6).

The closure of Peakhurst West Pool sparked widespread outrage among the St George community, with over 1,600 people signing a petition demanding its immediate reopening.

The pool was built and paid for by the community in 1961. It has been a valuable community asset, with thousands of local children having learned to swim at the pool over generations.

The NSW Education Department reversed its decision to close the pool indefinitely and announced at 3pm on Tuesday (10 December) that it would reopen the pool on Saturday 14 December.

A community meeting to protest the closure was scheduled for 4pm, but instead became a celebration in response to the news.

David Coleman, the Federal Member for Banks said the huge community response to the closure of the pool is a big part of why it is now re-opening.

“This is fantastic news for our community. The pool should never have been closed, and I’m very glad that this decision has been reversed,” Mr Coleman said.

“The pool has been a key part of the community more than 6 decades and is used every week by hundreds of local residents.”

“The State Government must ensure that the pool gets the resources it needs, and nothing like this ever happens again. “
